Our school cafeterias are ripe with opportunities to facilitate learning of some of the most important kinds, and farms are ready to help!
Local purchasing (also called procurement) in school meals, snacks and summer programs is a cornerstone of Farm to School work, and provides students with quality meals while also supporting farmers and producers in our area. Fruit, vegetables, grain products, and proteins are all included in school meals and can be supplied by farmers and producers around us.
It can seem intimidating not knowing what farms to source from, how to navigate school food requirements, or how to get kids invested in eating parsnips, but it can be done!
The RI Farm to School Network, in partnership with the RI Division of Agriculture, RI Department of Education, Farm Fresh Rhode Island, and Commerce RI, was proud to host a new event designed to connect local food producers with buyers for RI’s K-12 schools and colleges. Click for event resources!
